Peppermint syrup is made by using pure peppermint extract, while the mint syrup is made from mint extract. The two both stem from the mint family, but peppermint is pure peppermint and the mint extract is usually derived from spearmint and peppermint.

If you would like to use peppermint leaves simply swap out the extract for 1 cup of fresh peppermint leaves and steep in the hot simple syrup for about an hour.

How To Make Peppermint Syrup At Home: Two Different Ways!

Recipe Calls For:

  • 1 teaspoon of pure peppermint extract or 1 cup of fresh peppermint leaves
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions: Peppermint Extract

  1. Gather Sugar and water and place in a small saucepan over medium heat, and stir continuously.
  2. When sugar is dissolved, go ahead and add peppermint extract, and stir in.
  3. Remove off heat and let the mixture cool down.
  4. Pour simple syrup solution into a sealable container and place in the fridge.

Instructions: Fresh Peppermint Leaves

  1. Place sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat and stir until sugar is dissolved.
  2. When fully dissolved, turn off the heat and place freshly rinsed peppermint leaves, and steep for about an hour.
  3. Remove leaves with a metal mesh strainer, and toss.
  4. Let the mixture cool down and then pour it into a sealable container. Wallah, you’re done!

Recipe Note:

  • The Peppermint simple syrup will last for several weeks in the fridge due to the sugar acting as a preservative, of course always check for spoilage and discard if it seems iffy.
  • The simple syrup can be frozen for up to 3 months, in a freezer container, but make sure to leave room for expansion.
  • The recipe can be adjusted for taste, if you want a strong peppermint taste, simply add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract stir, and taste check.
  • To avoid crystelizing we recommend adding a teaspoon of lemon juice or a 1/2 tablespoon of corn syrup.

If you commit peppermint syrup in exchange for peppermint extract, you’ll need to reduce the extract to a tiny amount. Also, keep in mind by not adding the syrup it will only taste like peppermint but will be bitter. Thus you’ll want to add sugar as well.

Is peppermint extract sweet?

No, all extracts are not sweet but do smell heavenly so they can trick you into thinking they are sweet by how good they smell. Since the extract is made from the addition of alcohol, and no sugar it will lack a sweet taste. It will also be very potent and most likely take awful when tasted alone.
